Originally created by and on loan from the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, this traveling exhibition, Degenerate! Hitlers War on Modern Art examined the Nazi campaign against modern art and music. It featured works by artists deemed “degenerate” by the Third Reich, as Nazi propaganda and public indoctrination weaponized nonconformist cultural expression during their rise to power. To better accomodate the gallery space, modifications were made to the original exhibitions’ floorplan, labels, timeline graphic, and narrative display. A replication of the actual 1937 exhibition, Entartete Kunst, can be found within the Degenerate! exhibit, giving the visitors a taste of how these artworks were displayed. Utilizing archival images from the 1937 show, the walls of the replicated exhibition contained hand-painted murals of messaging from the Nazi party. To provide the audience an interactive experience, a period-accurate stereo was used to share “degenerate” music via iPad and inset speakers. Visitors were able to share their thoughts on the exhibition in the comment books as they exited the exhibition. This traveling exhibition debuted in the Senator John Alario, Jr. Special Exhibit Gallery at The National WWII Museum.
