Our War Too: Women in Service was the first special exhibit at The National WWII Museum to highlight the personal stories of women in uniformed services who served during World War II and their struggles for equal rights. A lenticular title wall welcomed visitors with images of veterans, setting the stage for the myriad of women whose artifacts and stories are displayed in cases. Interactive elements, such as an electronic scrapbook, allowed the audience to view more veterans’ photographs, and a physical code breaker wheel with a top-secret message to decode was introduced for visitors to experience the role of a Code Girl. They followed the branded prompts and cracked the coded message on collectable worksheet notes. We Were There interactive biographies highlighted how these servicewomen’s efforts have forged a path for those within or considering national service today. Comment books concluded the experience, allowing visitors to share their thoughts. This special exhibit was showcased in the Senator John Alario, Jr. Special Exhibit Gallery at The National WWII Museum, and was highlighted during the 2024 Women’s History Symposium. It will continue to travel nationally through 2030.
