The Go For Broke Spirit: Legacy in Portraits is a selection of photographer Shane Sato’s powerful portraits of Japanese-American veterans of World War II. This first-of-its-kind portrait series featured veterans who persevered in the face of exclusion, while examining the history of thousands of people of Japanese descent in the U.S. who were subject to prejudice and incarceration. Many of these men and women who were once deemed second-class citizens received belated recognition of their wartime valor. Therefore, the exhibition welcomed visitors with a visual representation of these veterans’ extensive honors. Photographs from inside the domestic incarceration camps, veterans as young men, and the Medal of Honor that few have been awarded, are utilized throughout the exhibit to highlight the valour of the Japanese-American people. Artifacts from the domestic incarceration camp accompanied the portraits as visitors make their way to know the kinship and spirit that endures today. It was showcased in the Joe W. and Dorothy D. Brown Foundation Special Exhibit Gallery at The National WWII Museum.
