April 19, 2023 – May 17, 2023
As part of the NODE Center for Curatorial Studies certification program for Exhibition Design (2023), an example of the exhibition The Stones of Piranesi was developed and modeled in 3D. The challenge was to present 14 engravings by the architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi in 18th century Rome, in a small corner exhibition hall with many windows. The artworks were examined under various lenses; composition, preferred viewing distance, narrative sequencing, and spatial relativity. A central column set at an angle guided the visitor into a space that is emblematic of the stone material used for the engravings themselves. The artworks are grouped with a sensitivity to a spatial awareness, complementary composition and atmosphere conveyed (archaeological reconstruction versus the artists imagination). A portion of the gallery space is blocked off to act as a viewing space for a projected documentary film on the etching process.
